WELCOME
Our Story

We met in college, living 3½ hours apart in California and connected by the I-5, known as the Grapevine. For four years, we drove it every other week—through a winding mountain range and unpredictable conditions—to build a life together. That road became an early lesson in commitment, resilience, and faith, and it ultimately inspired the name and philosophy behind Grapevine Financial.

We married in 2011 and moved across the country so Lauren could pursue her doctorate. During that time, we faced profound personal loss and serious health challenges that reshaped how we viewed family, stability, and long-term planning. During this time, Lauren met Vicki Brackens, a respected advisor whose influence proved pivotal. Vicki introduced us to the financial planning industry and modeled what it truly means to serve clients—with integrity, empathy, and discipline. Her belief in us, and her unwavering commitment to doing what is right, set the standard that continues to guide our firm.

Inspired by that mentorship, we returned to California to build careers dedicated to helping families plan for the future. Our roots remained in Fresno, but our careers were taking us to Los Angeles. Once again, we found ourselves commuting through the Grapevine while building our careers and raising our growing family, including the arrival of our daughters, Beverly and Violet. Those demanding years reinforced the importance of preparation, consistency, and execution, values that remain central to how we serve our clients today.

As our careers progressed, our family grew, and unforeseen health challenges began to reshape our priorities. In late 2017, James' mother was diagnosed with advanced bone cancer following a devastating fall. Two months later, Lauren's father passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. These experiences gave us firsthand insight into the emotional and financial realities of caregiving, loss, and life's unexpected transitions. In 2019, we relocated to Dallas, Texas to be closer to family and help care for James' mother during her final years. We continued serving clients throughout this chapter, remaining committed to the relationships we had built before ultimately founding Grapevine Financial.

Rooted in Legacy. Guided by the Harvest.

Our family’s story—like our planning philosophy—begins with intention.
James’ greatgreatgrandfather, Israel, was born enslaved. After emancipation, he shed the name forced upon him and stood at a literal and symbolic fork in the road, choosing between Texas and Louisiana. That “fork in the woods” shaped our path and inspired the family’s name, Woodfork.
In the years following slavery, his greatgrandparents, Tom and Fannie, purchased about 25 acres of land in Southeast Texas—establishing our family estate and laying a foundation rooted in ownership and selfdetermination.
His grandmother, Madea, raised her ten children on that land, teaching them the value of hard work, discipline, and stewardship. Those lessons were carried forward. His father took that discipline into military service and later into a career in the defense industry. His father, aunts, and uncles later worked together to establish the family trust, ensuring that the legacy they inherited would continue for future generations.
Our firm is built on the strength of these generations, and their example continues to shape how we guide clients through financial planning—season by season, with purpose.
This is more than our history—it’s the foundation of how we serve, now and in the future.
Like a garden, meaningful wealth is cultivated season by season. It requires vision, stewardship, and patience long before the harvest arrives. Our role is to help families plant wisely today so they can bear fruit for generations tomorrow.
